The Bronx Museum of the Arts wants to connect multicultural audiences with different urban backgrounds and experiences through its contemporary works and exhibitions and educational dialogues. It was founded in 1971 and after it changed its location several times, it established its current permanent location designed by Arquitectonica, which received the prize of Excellence in design from the City of New York in 2003.
The museum space expanded over time and it currently hosts exhibitions, events, dialogues and programmes for families. The current count of artworks exhibited in the museum reaches 600 pieces. The first collection presented in 1986 contained works made by artists of Asian, Latin and African descent. In 2012 The Bronx Museum of Arts celebrated its 40 years anniversary by receiving a donation from the Ford Foundation which enabled it to purchase 40 new pieces signed by Juan Downey, Raphael Montanez Ortiz, Elizabeth Catlett and many others.
