The New Yorkers come to Maria Hernandez Park to have a breath of fresh air in the middle of the hectic city life, to relax and enjoy the warm weather, and to do some sports.
This park is more than just a pretty place, it’s named in honor of the Brooklyn’s community activist who tragically died fighting for her ideals. Maria Hernandez was a leader in a struggle with drug dealers who flooded her neighborhood. Being an encouraging and inspiring role model, Maria organized events, doing literally everything she could to rid the streets of drugs and criminals. She was killed at her thirties but never forgotten, and the park was renamed in her honor.
Nowadays Maria Hernandez Park is a beautiful place for adults and kids to hang out. There’re basketball and handball courts, various eateries, playgrounds for kids, and fitness activities. The park often hosts entertaining events for the whole family.
