The venue is a brainchild of Matthew Marks who used to work as a drawing dealer during 90’s. He always wanted to open his own art gallery right here in Chelsea that will host some big names of contemporary art. This is how Matthew Marks Gallery appeared in 1994.

The gallery has immediately rushed into an A-list venue for infamous contemporary artists including Nan Goldin. Her exhibitions were quite intimidating for the audience from the downtown. Her gem-like toned works depict former lovers and friends including a medieval hymn once recorded by Björk.

Some of other European big names made their debut public appearances in this gallery and are still represented by the venue. Ugo Rondinone is among them. The gallery gave a start for a successful career of this award-winning Swiss artist. The main space hosts a wide selection of contemporary exhibitions and events for all tastes.
