What started in an apartment as a somewhat informal get-together tradition has grown into a veritable art institution. Miguel Algarin started by organizing events at his own apartment and inviting those artists who would not get the due recognition in the mainstream culture. The events proved so popular that Algarin and a few of his collaborators had to move these nights into an actual building.
Nuyorican Poets Cafe has been doing many things that other venues would not go for as too risky or too avant-garde. Here, though, everyone has a shot at being heard. Open mics, hip-hop and latin jazz nights, slam poetry readings and more, is what you can expect to find here. Emcees, singers, dancers mix with poets, artists, and storytellers.
What’s important to know for the viewer, is that some of the best open mic events happen here. It’s also the place to go for the newest and freshest performances. It’s living and breathing art; it may not have been picked out and arranged nicely for you. This is more of a flea market than a proper museum, but it does give you a taste of something wonderful and very much alive.
