Retro orange VW van is a hero of this offbeat taquería: the whole ambiance is organized around it. Because of vehicle presence and concrete floor the unconventional space may look like a garage at first, but not until you hang out here for a bit. As soon as you notice other components of the décor, you get Tacombi’s authentic charm and continuous party atmosphere.
Lofty space contains tropical flowers, surfing-inspired elements, simple tin-top tables, flash screen streams endless surf video...There are some specialties about ordering system as well. First, the venue has its own currency, so you have to change you dollars for the blue poker chips. Second, the beverage spot is done separately from tacos, which makes service a little bit chaotic, or relaxed, as it goes on the sunny shores of Mexico.
And naturally, tacos are delicious. New Yorkers are pretty spoiled with the large assortment of Mexican eateries, but just wait to play an expert here: achiote-marinated pork shoulder swaddled in banana leaves, juicy barbacoa tacos, made from wine-and-ancho-chile-marinated brisket, the mole poblano chicken taco — every one with double corn tortilla and fragrant toppings — can beat any common tacos in town. The fans of crunch and spicy will totally enjoy the local tostada with avocado and a vibrant tomatillo-avocado salsa. La Antigua Cafe, serving homemade agua frescas, will freshen you up after a hot seasoning experience you inevitably get at Tacombi.
