This is the largest mausoleum in North America and is home to the man who helped to end the bloodiest chapter in the history of the United States: The American Civil War. Grant was commanding general of the union army at the time of the end of the war and went on to become President of the United States just a few years later, his wife is also buried here in what is a show of the gratitude he received from the people of the country when the war came to an end.
It was completed in 1897, just 12 years after his death, and is often referred to as Grant's Tomb, additions have been made in the intervening years including seventeen mosaic benches by the artist Pedro Silva which were added in the 1970's. It's an incredible structure and a true testament to a man who helped the nation to heal after what is still the bloodiest conflict in its history.
