Central Park became so famous due to certain aspects of it that are renowned worldwide. In this category, along its theater, ice-skating rink, meadows and lake, lies another very popular attraction that gained a world wide fame - the Great Lawn. Located at the very heart of Central Park, this is one of the most popular green spaces in the world with references in many series or films. Once the city's main reservoir, these 55 acres are now a vast green space with baseball diamonds.
The place is perfect to visit during summer months for having a picnic, listening to music, sunbathing, taking a nap or reading a book. There were many famous artists that held concerts on the Great Lawn. For instance, Simon & Garfunkel held a concert here in 1981, then in 2008 Bon Jovi performed there. The site is also a favorite spot to listen to performances from the New York Philharmonic or the Metropolitan Opera.
The Great Lawn was restored to its original beauty in 1995, thanks to the Central park Conservancy after the place had been run down due to overuse in the 60's and 70's. Great Lawn lies between 79th and 85th Street and it is a perfect place to lie down from April till late November.
