Smalls is a tiny venue with an atmosphere that’s absolutely perfect for appreciating live jazz. The place is a great find: it isn’t flashy or too bent on advertising itself. It’s just there, almost hidden, but very inviting if you know what to look for.
Smalls usually gets pretty crowded, which is not surprising considering that it really is not big and the live acts they have are absolutely amazing. To get a taste of that, you can check the archives on their website: they have audio recordings of many artists that performed in the club.
This jazz club might even seem a bit of a time machine. With a (reasonably priced) drink in your hand, enraptured crowd all around you and great musicians on stage, it feels like somewhat like going back to basics. This is a place where you come for music, not food, so music, as expected takes center stage. However, if you prefer to be seated for a concert, you’d better come a bit early.
