Since New York is so keen on art and culture a vast public library was a must. Thus the city has another landmark and iconic symbol that also helps the locals broaden their wisdom. The NYPL main branch is a century old and it is a good setting to read a book, with its royal look it sets a beautiful mood appropriate for lectures and reading. As you enter the building you will find its two mascots, two massive Tennessee marble lions which have Patience and Fortitude written on them. They just stand there and guard the doors of knowledge.
Check out the Rose Main Reading room, a vast and cavernous space that goes well into 300 feet. The reading room has chandeliers and ceiling murals. The location was also featured in Ghostbusters and got quite a lot of media coverage. You can get to see the place a bit better with the help of free tours, one at 11 am and another at 2 pm. The tours will take you through Rose Main Reading Room and Bill Blass Public Catalog Room. If you catch one of the events at the NYPL they are beautiful to attend, especially if there are author readings, special exhibitions, and lectures.
